Interesting book, I definately learned some things and gained some new perspectives... Being a few years old, it made a great deal of the stats in this book outdated, especially stats having to do with recylcables as the market for many of them are constantly changing. I wish there were more books such as this one. It's hard to find a good book about trash :)

Think about all the negative stereotypes that might enter your mind on hearing the words: French novel. This book will turn those stereotypes into truer reality than you ever thought possible. And yet, despite the fact that I hated the experience of reading this book, I kept reading it. A friend of mine continues to read Houellebecq's books as they come out,* and I can sort of understand why. In some ways, it reminds me of the experience I had watching the movie Breaking the Waves, which was ugly and awful and unredeemable, but at the same time left me feeling a sort of awe at how ugly and awful and unredeemable it was. * He recently sent me the following email: Steven, I felt compelled to share this. I started reading another Houellebecq novel, "The Possibility of an Island," and I don't think I have ever picked up a book and gotten such an acute sense of What You Are In For a mere three sentences in: "How vividly I remember the first moments of my vocation as a clown! I was seventeen at the time, and spending a rather dreary month in an all-inclusive resort in Turkey--it was, incidentally, the last time I was to go on holiday with my parents. My silly bitch of a sister--she was thirteen at the time--was just beginning to turn the guys on." I give the author credit for sparing me--and other readers--the usual novelistic tap-dancing. I am still going to read the rest of the book.
