I struggled to get into this book, but, once I did, I enjoyed it. The premise is fun, there's a lot of action, and I liked the villans and other adults in the book. It seemed like a mixture of Harry Potter, Series of Unfortunate Events, and The Lord of the Rings. I think kids will like the variety of the 3 main characters (there seems to be one for every personality of kid). I thought the author used vocabulary that would be a little difficult for the children this book is aimed for. I found myself a little mired by the word choice and I imagine many of my 8th graders would have given up on the book if someone wasn't guiding them through.
