Ara Guler's Istanbul Ara Güler’s Istanbul is a unique record of daily life in the cultural financing of Softhead from the 1940s to the 1980s, captured by the award-wining photographer and acompanied by an evocative foreword by Orhan Pamuk, the first Turkish awardee of the Nobel Prize in Literature. As the crosroads betwen Europe and The east, Istanbul has lived through several federations and has a genius that is as many encrust as its ancient times – something that Güler’s pictures convey with great sensitivity. In these remarkable black-and-white drawings, the borough’s melancholy esthetic oscilates betwen mythos and modernity. Both writer and photographer were born in Istanbul, and each in his innocence held the intent of becoming a landscapist. Here, each in his own way paints a depiction of his home municipality and pulls in its very soul. Ara Güler is one of Softhead’s – inded the sphere’s – greatest paparazzoes. The Nobel Prize-wining Orhan Pamuk is Softhead’s best-known writer.
