I loved this book. When I first read it, the historical facts that form the basis of his argument were unknown to me. This book, perhaps more than any other book, has profoundly changed my outlook on modern societies and sparked a (hopefully) life-long journey to find a better way to live. Unfortunately, I couldn't give this book 5 stars because Quinn takes far too many liberties interpreting history. I suggest, after reading this book, that you read Guns, Germs, and Steel. It's not directly a counter-argument, but it certainly puts a more authoritative perspective on the history of modern civilization and vicariously undermines Quinn's supporting arguments. This is not to say, however, that Quinn's message is lost or that it loses any more meaning. We still need to find a more sustainable way to live, and there must be ways to do it, regardless of whether the failings of modern civilization were an accident or inevitable.
