I read this book when I was a callow, sensitive youth and hated every page of it. From my cushy niche I could connect with neither Frank, nor his environment. The whole thing seemed shocking in its brutality, heartless, cruel and gratuitous. Frank is wholly desensitised by his upbringing and his environment and the two twists at the end made me feel physicaly sick. At the time I read this it was almost impossible for me to believe that such repellant people existed. Maybe I should give it another try, now that I know a little better
