Loved this book. I don't know what it is about Moore's writing that is so awesome, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's a combination of humor, sarcasm, wit, honesty, and entertainment that really makes him such a great author. I've read quite a few of his books now, and I've really enjoyed all of them. The fun part is that some of the characters/brief plot points tie back in to two of his other books (You Suck and Bite Me), which is a fun little twist. If you're looking for a funny book, an entertaining story, and great characters (even the hellhounds were written as great characters), give this one a shot. And if you like it, check out the two books mentioned above, and Coyote Blue, another great one from Moore.

There were a few chuckles in this book, but everything seemed forced, set-up and a bit too 'precious.' .

Well, I broke down and read a book I normally wouldn't pick up. An Oprah book!! My wife calls me a snob, and she's probably right. Anyway, I did find The Road entertaining (if that word can be used, given the story), but I certainly wasn't wowed by this book. McCarthy's minimalist style took me awhile to get used to, but I did. In a way, perhaps his minimalist, often simplistic, mostly colorless usage of the english language was meant to mirror the post-apocalyptic gray, ashen world of The Road. It's worth a read, but pick up a used copy.

** spoiler alert ** !!!!!!SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!! The book was recommended to me by one of my best friends with a warning that it has incest. I am really not a fan of incest stories since i have a older brother myself, but after she told me that she had cried so much while reading it, i thought i should give it a try. 96 pages. That's how far I could go. It had a nice melancholic start, but then it kept it's boring, dry style of writing on and on that I wanted to close the book after only reading 10 pages of it. But, since i already told my friend i would read it, i pushed myself to read more. I don't know the reason why it was so hard for me to keep on reading after those 10 pages. Maybe the it's because of fact that i am not comfortable with incest, or that the story was too predictable/cliché or that the whole story seemed to me so incredibly unrealistic while trying to be realistic... For example, the thing with some stranger picking up the kids from school and the school not even bothering about to take a phone number of that person? That could happen in Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Chile, China or some other under-developed/developing country BUT NOT UK. After 96 pages of boredom, i skipped pages just to learn that at the end, the siblings get caught, Lochan goes to jail for "rape" (which i do not understand. There are 13 years old getting pregnant without being accused of rape in UK) and then afterwards, afraid that Maya would go into jail, he hangs him self. What is the point of reading this book? I really want to know. That said, I am glad I haven't read the whole book. It was right decision to skip parts after 96 pages. However, If you are a fan of incest stories, go for it.
