charming. it's what i hope our bookclub becomes one day. i loved every word in this book. and then made all my friends read it.
I'm sorry to have to assign one star to this book. I searched and searched and there was no option of half a star or no star at all. I admire Carolyn Hart's body of work. I mean, for goodness sake, I devour her Death on Demand series set on one of the sea islands near Hilton Head. I love the Henrie O series featuring the retired journalist who gets herself into unusual situations. Carolyn Hart is one of the founding members of Sisters in Crime and has won numerous Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity awards. But this book, I couldn't read. Obviously, I didn't notice anything at the library other than "Oh good, it's a new Carolyn Hart." I failed to notice that the book is about a ghost who is sent from Heaven as part of the "Rescue Express" to help solve a crime back in Oklahoma. Obviously, I would never have checked it out if I had read the book flap. But check it out, I did, and took it into McAlister's Deli to enjoy reading over my cup of soup and salad (by the way, the soup and salad were both delicious). I read 50 pages and couldn't take it any more. I made my mental predictions about what was going to happen, read the last 15 pages, realized that I guessed everything accurately and spent the rest of the meal reading the back of the Splenda packages and menorizing the menu. Ms Hart, I have to ask, has the constant wind and scorching summers in Oklahoma affected your judgement? Please don't make this character into a series. Please.
Certainly dark, and gives the reader a lot to think about. I think it may take more than one read to get everything -- a very rich and complex story.
