Part literary fiction, part murder mystery, completely engrossing. Dr. Jennifer White, a preeminent orthopedic surgeon, is forced to retire after being diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer's. When her best friend, Amanda, is found murdered in her home with four fingers amputated surgically, the mystery begins. Who did it and why? The novel is told in first person narrative -- through the mind of Dr. White. Given her dementia, her memories come and go, from recent memory glimpes on good days to memories of the past. Through her recollections and her reporting of the conversation's of others (she keeps a memory diary that her children, doctor and others write in), we eventually learn what happened. A twist at the end keeps you guessing. I thoroughly enjoyed this unusual novel.
