While Palmer doesn't cover belgians, which are the new fad, or delve too deeply into high-gravity beers in general, he gives you the workbench to produce excellent session beers like ales, porters, and stouts. (Don't bother with lagering at home unless you're a fanatic). He's also really good as explaining (and dramatizing) the science behind brewing without paraphrasing the textbooks.
