I have to admit that I had a hard time with this book. I like the characters that Cassandra Clare has developed - the personalities, the diversity of paranormal representation ...blah, blah, blah.... you know, the usual schtick. I really like the easy way you get into the banter and her sense of humor - because you really do have to read this type of book with a wee sense of humor . It's not meant to be taken seriously. (I hope). Anyways - regardless of all that - this book I found to be a little on the wanting side. There was too many whiny characters, too much angst and pouting for me to decide who and what I cared about. And the plot was thin. (Thinner than usual) and it was stretched out beyond where it should have been. Too much running around and people feeling sorry for themselves. I found that the time was made to slow down and the pages became harder and harder to turn - when I start to get antsy and flip the pages to see how much more I have to get through before I get to the end ...at least 2/3 of the way into the story- it's not usually a good sign for me. What I think it was, and I may be off base on this, is that this book was one of those dreaded 'in-between' books. You know the ones I'm talking about - mid way in a book series there's usually always one book (sometimes two) that there's lots of words and pages with very little that carries forward. Lots happened before and there's lots promised to happen soon (but just not in this book...stay tuned and buy the next one). I truly detest these books. I'm already like a fish with a hook in it's mouth - gobbling up the next book in the series - so I feel incredibly let down when it doesn't deliver like the others. Why do editors let them do it?????? Oh yeah - it brings in money. And the ending - well don't get me started- it just pissed me off. I really, really, really detest those 'Dallas' endings (for all those youngins out there - it's a hanger that somehow makes the whole previous series moot. Or close to moot). This whole ranting may be due to the fact that I am PMSing, but I'm not going to reread it to see if it's different. I'll wait for the next book and hope it improves. And that something better happens....or at least, something happens.
