Intense and terrifying, but breathtakingly beautiful. The prose and the story were compelling in their simplicity. Much easier to get through than I would expect from something so well written - the character's needs in the book are so imperative that you get sucked in. I'm a little iffy about the end though - it's not what I expected and didn't quite fit with how I saw the journey of the rest of the book. One of the best books I've read in a long time.
this is one of those books that i pick up every now and then for inspiration.
This book was only similiar to three other books I've read: Great Expectations, Oh the Glory Of It All, and A Seprate Peace. That being said, I hated all of those books with a passion. I have three judgement of this book. As a debut novel it was okay, messy, cut up but it had a decent message with heavy handed symbolism. As a stand alone novel it was lame, the protaganist was a self absorbed jerk, and not the cool kind, the pouty why-doesn't-anybody-see-how-great-I-am kind. Lastly as a Scott Fitzgerald book it is the sad little runt of the litter. I still mantain my respect for him as an author, it's just a shame that this is in print.
