Wow. This is the first book in months that I've felt compelled to write down my thoughts on - I adored it. At first I wasn't quite sure about it, as the language was so "unflowery" and her writing felt a little jarring to me. It only took a few chapters for me to get used to the style, though, and after that I just found that simple language beautiful. The plot of this story was heart-wrenching, and any time I get to use that adjective to describe a book you know it's got to be at least 4 stars ;-) It's an amazing storyteller who can make a book so completely tragic and yet completely satisfying at the same time. My heart absolutely ached for these characters throughout the story - and the setting of WWII Soviet Union was a perfect backdrop for a tragic love story. Tatiana is my new favorite female hero - a tiny little 18-year-old who is the most unbelievably strong and courageous person. Fifteen minutes after I finished this book, the next in the series was purchased and up on my Nook - can't wait to continue the story!
I can't wait to discuss this semi scandalous book!
a light, funny, self-deprecating book about a woman who moves from NJ (NY suburbs) to a farm in VA with her husband (his dream) and their 2 boys (7 & 14). she's very "jersey" - she acknowledges this - and not at all a rural kind of gal, but her stories are funny and it provides chuckles along the way. if you're looking for something light - maybe a beach book for the summer - this might be on your list. ...I gave up on this book because it was just too cliche.
