Synopsis Seventeen year old Meg’s been at loggerheads with her father all her life, and this time she’s gone and done something so outrageous he’s given up all hope: she got arrested. Just her luck, her ‘cop’, has a lesson to teach her. He makes sure that Meg and her associate trespassers each spend a weeks worth of nights, during spring break, with one of the emergency services their little escape disturbed. Guess what? Meg gets the ‘police’, or rather Officer After, the officer who arrested her high, drunk, and pre-sex on an off limits railway bridge, in the first place. A week with John After will open her eyes and ultimately make her face the consequences of her past behaviour and the unhealthy, lonely direction her life is heading in. Of course the irritating, sexy way he manages to scrape under her skin and singe her doesn’t impede this process although it does lead her to push both of them right to the edge... Just how hard is it to break a cop? And does she want to break him after all? Especially when sitting back and baking cobbler for him seems so much more appealing. My Review I haven’t read anything by Jennifer Echols before, except ‘The Boys Next Door’ which was okay but not ‘punchy’. This novel is definitely ‘punchy’, it’s got attitude. I loved the character of Meg, even if she’s not really anything like me, well not in the life experience arena. Meg’s self-analysis and eventual ‘growth’ were all believable and raw, they made me feel shallow truth be told, and I love the book for that. I think it has some very worthwhile things to say. The scenes in this novel and the way they were portrayed were all very fresh. The novel did make me smile. It’s a page-turner - I stayed up quite late for the first half and came right back to it the next day. For a chick lit summer read it makes the list, and even better I can say it is cleverly written. It didn’t make me laugh out loud or cry, it wasn’t as good as it could have been, but it was GOOD. I was fully engaged throughout and Meg and John made an interesting ‘high tension’ combination - Jennifer’s writing is spot on (and dreamy!). I will recommend this book to my friends. I did feel that the novel came to a rather abrupt ending, although it was ‘fairytale’ and optimistic. Personal Verdict I’m hoping for a sequel and I’ll be looking out for anything new published by Jennifer in the future!
