At first, I thought this was a hateful, angry book. But the writing was good enough that it kept me going, and then, not long afterwards, I began to realize that it wasn't hateful at all--just clear-eyed, and also, frankly, brilliant. Franzen also maintains a lovely story arc, which I find to be rare in books like this one. I was truly sorry to see it come to an end. One caveat, though--I'm a birdwatcher and obsessive environmentalist myself, and even I felt that aspect of the story wore a little thin after a while.
