This book is life changing. I'm so glad I read it directly after reading The Poisonwood Bible, as they fit into each other perfectly. I'd heard about this book a lot in high school but never read it because the title sounded so heavy handed and hyperbolic. After finally reading it, I found it to be very level headed and not preachy at all. It was absolutely fascinating and like learning history all over again. It doesn't paint America as a villain but it does call into question the idea of American Exceptionalism, with well researched and thought provoking arguments. I honestly think this book should be required reading, as it gives readers such a bigger view of this world and our place in it. I'm amazed that a book written over 20 years ago is still so relevant that it could have been written yesterday and none would be the wiser. Given the current spike in racial injustice, the upcoming US presidential election and the popularity of a candidate who spoke against economic injustice, this book provided the context that put these current events into a much broader perspective for me and helped them make more sense. It's discouraging to realize that not much has changed in the 20 years since this book was written but I'm still holding out hope.
