I am feeling sceptical about this one.
My mother (who is British), highly recommended this book and I can see why. It's quite atmospheric and pleasantly British in its quiet descriptions of the 1940's and the demise of the gentry. While I enjoyed the writing and characterizations, especially in the first half of the book, I grew tired of the slow pace. I hadn't expected a page turning thriller, but I'd expected a little more plot and mystery. Frankly, I found the whole thing rather anticlimactic and the "surprising ending" my mother discussed wasn't such a surprise......
