I found this book to be highly accessible and fun to read. After a while, I wasn't surprised by his successive examples. But, I did think that he did a wonderful job demonstrating emergent behaviors of complex organized systems. Being a devotee of complexity theory, this book was right up my alley. It gave me a chance to articulate mentally what I already knew to be true experientially.
The Rhetoric of History by Savoie Lottinville (1976)
Cosmic Humanism, energy religion or "spiritualism" summed up by an amateur writer. The popularity of this book is not due to the writing, but instead to the straightforward initiation it offers the reader into the basic tenets of spiritualism. Most books on this worldview tend to employ a lot of jargon and esoteric back and forth - this book tells you pretty plainly what it's all about. In the age of reason it is very attractive to learn about and open oneself to one's correlating spiritual nature. The spiritual side is greatly underfed in Western culture and many people hunger for more spiritual food. There are all kinds of spirits though and I find that books like this and the movement of "spiritualism", varied as it may be, leave followers unprepared to discriminate between the types of spiritual experiences they may have. I think there is a lot of truth in this book, but it can be very dangerous and difficult for those who open up the spiritual realm to guard themselves from harmful influences and the sometimes deep confusion and disorientation it can lead to. Starting with a book that brings a positive spiritual influence into one's life, so that the difference can be recognized, is far more powerful in bringing one to higher consciousness and greater happiness.
