This book follows the story of two children who both have immigrated from Russia with their families. Vaclav and Lena meet when they are 5 and they become best friends. Vaclav has loving parents, whereas Lena lives with her aunt who is a stripper and is never home. Vaclav's mother likes Lena and tries to look out for her. At age 9, something tragic happens to Lena and she disappears. Vaclav's mother will not tell him what happened to her. Eight years later they meet up again and they begin to develop feelings for each other. I thought the story was interesting, but I think the end of the book tied up too quickly and too nicely. I did not really become invested in the characters.
A page turner but this was the most passive girl ever. I do not feel sorry for her one bit!
