My mind is not set up for murder mystery solving. I'm glad that I never set out to be a detective or a French maid or any other profession that seems synonymous with murder and mystery and mansions and uhh monocles?? Anyway, this book was lots of fun. I think that I "knew" who the murderer was about 15 times for certain (there aren't even that many characters to choose from), and I was tickled by the ending. Now THAT is a way to end a book. None of this cliff-hanging, "I wonder what happens next? I guess I'll never know." stuff. None too scary but exciting and befuddling, this book was lots of fun.

Good, well-written. Common story of woman leaving marriage to find real self, while experiencing mother's apparent mental illness (cutting off fingers). Affair with monk exposes true inner self. Underlying story about cause of father's death when she was 9. Full of good, likeable characters.

http://www.penguin.co.nz/nf/Book/Book... I was hoping for a more personal account of how he interpreted being Pakeha in contemporary New Zealand. Instead, the book is chockers with name dropping.
