This book gave me nightmares. It's hard for me to give it more than two stars, because I really couldn't say I liked it. It was well written, but I felt like parts of it were missing. Of course that simply added to the disturbing feeling this book engenders. It is based in the small fictional Eastern European village of Wolfheim, it harkens back to the days and thoughts of Shelley's Modern Prometheus (Frankenstein). I find it hard to like, but also difficult to completely hate Herr Dokter. Monsters, cloning, religion, man's place, the basic nature of humanity all called into question, but the answers here are dark and obscure. It will definitely keep you guessing.
What I HATED!! 1. Cover - The dude is supposed to have supe long platinum blond hair. Who is on the cover? Not him. 2. The language - it is so old. Old terminology drives me nuts. "Was I missed?" in stead of "did you miss me?" Just little quirks all through the book including her romantic interlude (her words) and it's description. 3. Several conversations were incongruent to what was happening. Things brought up, but never answered. Partial info. that needs to be answered now, not in a couple books from now. Partial stories to take at face value that seemed to set something up, but I read the series out of order so I already knew the resolve. There just didn't seem to be a problem in the first place?? What was good... The story itself was really good... despite all my complaints. 3.5 stars
