How is this man still alive? He has more lives than an old lady's house full of cats. Thank God he is though, because he's one of the best in the business! I love Keef!!!!
A children's book by Gertrude Stein, yes. Sounds unlikely? It's actually surprisingly lovely. "The world is round and you can go on it around and around." It isn't all just wordplay, either; the children in it are real and alive.
What the hell happened at the end of this book? The last few pages almost entirely negate the magnificance of the majority of the book. Come on, Eggers, get it together...
Unnatural Causes nearly got four stars. It was an excellent adventure, but the ending with that tape-recorded confession was a bit too contrived. Still, this third in the Dalgliesh series is my favorite so far. I must here record an aside. I am impelled to wonder if Martha Grimes was inspired by this book. James' pub-full of eccentric characters in a quiet village certainly bears a bit of resemblance to the folks in Grimes' Long Pid. There's an aunt, though by no means as deplorable as Grimes' creation, whose name is Jane (as in Marple!?), and Grimes named her miserable aunt Agatha as a funny tribute to Christie. Even the surname Plant shows up. Please note I imply no plagiarism but rather a homage by Grimes to the "reigning mistress of murder" in the 1960s. (Grimes' first Richard Jury is from, I believe, 1981.) Of course it could all be coincidence, and I'm sketching links in the insubstantial air.
This is a very small book that I hardly recall reading. I gave this rating three stars, but I may have enjoyed it a little more than that.
Engrossed from start to finish
