Absolutely fascinating. Anyone, technical background or not, can read this book and be awed and amused by the many exploits of Kevin Mitnick.

My best friend and I read this book while browsing the used fiction section of a bookstore. It was written in 1899, which explains a lot, but it still makes me sad for our history (and I would be hard-pressed to in good conscience sell this book myself -- except as an example of What Not To Do). The "Indians" never get any tribal identity, have no qualms about leaving behind their community to go be a part of the white people's Mission... One creepy moment is when the title character's grandchildren play at being "wild Indians." They've become wholly assimilated into white culture, and their grandfather's childhood is as foreign to them as it is to us the white middle-class USian readers -- which is totally understandable, but still sad. The introduction claims that kids like books about Indians and about children, but the book quickly becomes just a collection of stories about making bricks and etc. -- nothing especially exciting except that it's a foreign world to the one we live in now ... the appeal of which I can certainly understand. There are also moments of poor writing, but on the whole it reads like a generic historical fiction kids book -- and I'm a bit abashed that if I'd read this as a teen I probably wouldn't have noticed anything wrong with it.
