I liked the story and the world. It was slightly messy writing wise. The main character had fits of anger/aggression that seemed unexplained or excessive. His age seemed to vary, I couldn't figure out if he was supposed to be 20 or 30. Anyway, am planning to read the next one.
The pearl is a powerful symbol of sin, temptation, and destruction. In the end, it will ruin you- as it did in the story.
This book contains one of the most realistic and sad portrayals of depression I've read. It also has a playful edge to it, particularly when dealing with the protagonist's schizophrenia. Highly recommended.
