(I read the Pilgrim Publications 1979 edition). Thirty-one short, pithy, and practical chapters on various issues of the Christian life such as What Is Pride, Sleep: A Gift Of God, Have Courage, and A Talk About Death. Very good.
I picked up this book because I so much admired de botton's Consolations of Philosophy. Frankly, this was a bit of a disappointment. The writing itself I found offputting, turgid even. Still, there were nuggets that shone out: the art of management, "a set of practices designed to coax rather than simply extort commitment out of workers"--and here I'd always hated the M word because I bristled at being "managed" as if a thing. how it's better not to expect too much of anything--to avoid losing one's temper when disappointed. Ridiculous. Entertaining, compelling, different...right up until it became utterly absurd. I won't ever finish it.
