This was a book club assignment. I wasn't too sure about this as I went along... but when I got to the end I could see why it won so many awards. It's a simple little book, with a mountain of character lessons.
I read this book WAY before the movie came out... hilarious, actually: I read it with a bookclub put together by the Kripke Jewish Federation Library in Omaha, where the librarian and myself were the youngest people in the group by about 45 years, and the only two people to "get it." It's friggin hilarious, and you need to go read it right now. This sparked my healthy obsession with Jonathan Safran Foer (and his wife, who is also an incredible young author), which was only slightly damaged when he spelled my name wrong at a book signing in Brookline.
Rereading this series as an adult is a very neat experience. The whole series has its ups and downs, but should be read in the intended order.
