This was one of the weirdest, wackiest books I’ve read in a long time. I’m not sure what to make of it. The first half to three-quarters is this really fast-paced spy thriller complete with a sinister secret society; then the story turns on its head and becomes a trippy, dreamlike allegory where nothing seems real. I kept asking myself, ‘What the heck is going on here?!’ Let’s just say I didn’t really get it the first time through. If I read it a second time, would things become clearer? I don’t know. Sunday’s revelation in chapter 13 was not a surprise to me; I had guessed it well before. I did like this book, just not the way it ended up. Favorite quotes: “There is a great deal to be said for death; but if anyone has a preference for the other alternative, I strongly advise him to walk after me.” – Ratcliffe “Bad is so bad, that we cannot but think good an accident; good is so good, that we feel certain that evil could be explained.” – Gabriel Syme
