Friedman is an unabashed cheerleader for globalization. A few weeks ago, his column in the New York Times was about a call center in Kenya where American companies are outsourcing customer service calls. In 'The World is Flat', he makes the compelling case that over-investment in fiber optic cable during the dot com boom and a perfect storm of innovations in supply chaining and management are driving all work to where it can be done most cheaply. He doesn't seem to be wary of this process at all, which is not to his credit. As a matter of fact, the benefits of globalization go almost entirely unquestioned in this tome. Nonetheless, his analysis of what is happening in the world and the way outsourcing is taking place was valuable to my understanding of world events. If you read this book, take it with a whole shaker full of salt.
