I'm conflicted about this one. On the one hand, I think its a tremendously important book for everybody to read. Both because it reminds us of the horrors of Nazi Germany, and because it is inspiring that despite it all, Anne never gives up hope or her faith in mankind. On the other hand, I feel guilty reading her diary. Revealed are her innermost thoughts and dreams, and she surely did not intend for the world to know her most private thoughts when she wrote them down. Its not the sort of book you'll enjoy reading, but it may very well be worth reading anyway.
Woodrell is a stunning writer, but this tale is hard to read. But impossible to put down! Set in the Ozarks, this tale is of an extended family whose livelihood consists of making & selling drugs. Ree Dolly, the heroine, is only 16 yrs old but she has the responsibility to care for 2 youngers brothers and her insane mother while desperately searching for her father. He has put their home up as collateral for his court appearance, and without this home, the family will have nowhere to go. It gives insight into persistent poverty, family feuds, friendship, despair, and hope. I'm glad I read it, though I found it disturbing.
