This is the book that made me love Neil Gaiman.
Beautiful writing, interesting story...took me a while to get through but I really enjoyed it
Goodreads freebie.Typical Tom Perotta novel which follows the inhabitants of a suburban town after a Rapture-like event where millions of people around the world suddenly disappear into thin air.The event is referred to as the Sudden Departure, as those who disappeared aren't necessarily believers, so it can't be The Rapture. Perotta's book doesn't spend any time trying to figure out why or how this happened, but focuses on "the leftovers". It doesn't really matter, that would be a different book. In the wake of the event, some interesting cults emerge. My favorite would have to be the Barefoot People, who decide that since you could get sucked up into the sky at any moment, you should commit what time you have left to enjoying your life. Basically they're a bunch of hippies who party all the time. The story revolves around the Garvey family, who actually have survived the Sudden Departure intact, but each family member has a different response to the upheaval. How do you go on living your normal life after nothing makes sense anymore? It's a good question and I felt Perotta did a nice job answering it.
