I love this book. I love that at one time, the US government supported artists who were union organizers, socialists, communists. anarchists and people from minority groups. Its a funny thing how this government went from supporting artists who's values were staunchly anti-capitalist and anti-war to doing away with arts funding (nearly) altogether. Funny. Or not funny at all. The reproductions in the book are beautiful, doing justice to the originals. The artists range from big names like Thomas Hart Benton, Peggy Bacon, John Sloan George Bellows, and Diego Rivera to lesser knowns like Kyra Markham, Clare Leighton and Mabel Dwight. "Life of the People" is the rare book that represents almost as many female artists as male artists. There are simple bios next to each artists name addressing only their work as artists, not as "male" or "female" artists. A refreshing change from most other art books.
