** spoiler alert ** Very mixed on this one. The writing is great and the subject matter is compelling, there are lots of five star moments, but a lot of one-star moments as well. It took me quite a while to get into the story, the interesting character development occurs in a rushed manner towards the last third of the novel. Sam is not a very likeable character, which is obviously intentional, the message here is that even the ‘mean girls’ are more than what they appear to be. Not sure how I felt about the fact that we are explicitly told that we are need to empathize with her, I think most people would have been able to get there on their own without Sam’s specific words to the reader. The redemption felt somewhat shallow and cliché to me, as if Sam still did not understand what was truly important in life. I also think the big issue of how Sam’s death would effect those left behind gets ignored completely.
