I don't know if the big plot twist at the end was supposed to be an unexpected surprise, but it was totally predictable from about 1/4 of the way into the book. Because if was so expected, the rest of the book was only interesting to the extent that you found the lives of the two daughters interesting, because there really was nothing else to figure out. In fact the whole book was quite predictable and a little depressing because the lives of the two main characters and of the mother of one were just unrelentingly not happy.
