I reread this in the summer of 1971 while in the vicinity of Walden pond. I was surprised by what the area looked like, aware that it might have looked different during Thoreau’s time there. Anyway, reading it at the site brought it up from 4 to 5 stars for me.

This is a book about sex, plain and simple. Actual plot is probably less than a third of the word count and is fed to the reader in snippets between sex scenes. Characterization and character development are almost nonexistent. I'm amazed I read a 365 page novel and still have no clue who the hero and heroine really are. Faith, Sabine's girlfriend, struck me as interesting at first, but over time she came across as needy, helpless, and neurotically attached to Sabine and Aiden who seemed more interested in exploiting her attachment than anything else. Sabine and Aiden love each other, but neither strikes me as particularly loveable. Sabine was one of those characters all the other characters admired, desired, and loved, but she never said, did, or emoted anything admirable, desireable, or loveable. I found the writing weak and awkward in places, better in other spots. Overall, just not my kind of read.
