Tagged as New Weird, this is more contemporary urban fantasy of a kind that Neil Gaiman has also written. Miéville's tale of London's magic underworld is full of competing and and mutually exclusive cults and mythologies that are nevertheless all and equally true. There are elements that experienced fantasy readers will recognize: The horrible killer and his strange partner; the cops who work the supernatural beat; the gangs. They're well mixed, alive and caught up in an approaching apocalypse. It's often deliberately confusing, but well worth the effort.
