I have never been that interested in John Adams, but this book had me enthralled. It puts the war and the formation of the US in such an incredible context. Plus, the writing is such that you never feel you are reading a stuffy biography. Instead, it comes off like prose and you end up enveloped in the story. Wonderful!

What a great book! The ending disappointed me, but only because I can be a sap sometimes. People always talk about how many similarities there are between the political situation in the book and now, and I see that; but what stood out to me was how different they were. If you consider the world situation the time the book was written (post-WWII, cold war beginning, civil-rights movement hadn't happened yet), I feel that George Orwell's description could be very believable. But in reality it feels like the power of the human soul won out.

Very amusing through out as Birdy deals with everything from the horrors of needlework to suitors of her father's choice to saving dancing bears. What I also liked was the way Birdy's faith life was just a natural fact of life - from her fascination with the saints and their days and their exploits was a stitch. And her pondering the eternal questions of evil and pain, etc., are the things we all, particularly young people, think about. Ex: Why didn't Jesus make a plant that could heal lepers instead of just healing the one? Then we could still use that plant to heal lepers now. Or how, just as the best cider has a few rotten apples in it, maybe the world is the same way - life wouldn't have sweetness without the sour. I'm sure I'd have loved this book as a kid, had I read it then.
