i tell everyone that this is my most favourite-est book ever, and it's still true. i love the weaving of different narratives, and how every character had a soul, even the evil ones. the severity of the war contrasts so poignantly with the simplicity and good humour of everyday life. admittedly, i found some of the post-war events in the novel a little tiresome. of course i enjoyed du beniere's prose still, but the climax for me remains at the 2/3rds mark, everything after was a drawn-out conclusion. as an aside, the movie sucked donkey balls, i even went out of my way to find a copy that didn't have nicholas cage and penelope cruz snogging on the front cover.
