illustrations were great!
A fascinating and disturbing look at what happened after deinstitutionalization (which was, basically, when states closed their mental hospitals, which were notorious for horrendous neglect and worse, rather than investing in proper care and oversight) without a social safety net in place. The result was a gaping hole in the mental health system, which is being filled by prisons and jails ill equipped to deal with mentally ill people. This is not an uplifting book, but a must-read for anyone interested in mental illness, prisoner rights, and this country’s broken mental health system.
