Knowing that this was a "classic," I finally listened to it on tape. The narration was great, but I didn't find the book to be all that interesting or engaging. Actually, the last part when they were in Mexico was pretty interesting. A large part of the book deals with drinking, partying, encounters with women... not my cup of tea. There are other, much better, "road trip" type books out there. For instance, I really enjoyed Steinbeck's "Travels With Charlie." And "Walk Across America" while a story of walking through America rather than driving it, was very good. I guess "On The Road" gets its acclaim because it was the first of its genre. First it may well be, but certainly not the best.
good book!
many laffs and a grave contemplation of absurd cali writerly vibes. the "chapter" regarding the trout stream for sale is crucial.
