continuing my on-going re-read Austen program. I think, however, that I have never read Emma before. I know the story, of course, have seen the G Paltrow movie and Clueless. But I realized while reading this that there were details new to me. Also, I surely would have remembered how tiresome Mr. Woodhouse is. He must surely be the worst character Austen has created. I came to dread any scene that involved the old man - especially if he was eating or discussing a dish of thin gruel. This has to be my least favorite Austen. Unlikely I'll read it again.

This was a nice easy book to read whilst away as it is split into short chapters told by different characters - just what I needed. Sexton and Honora marry and begin to build a life together in a house at the beach. While he is off selling typewriters she wanders the beach collecting sea glass. But Sexton makes a bad decision and they nearly lose everything. The mill workers where he finally finds work are being forced to work long hours for less and less pay, so a strike is planned ... and once again the they find themselves in the thick of it all as plans are made in their house. But once again Sexton is a double-edged barrel and is only thinking of himself. Sad ending but a good ending!
