I didn't like this one as much as the others she's written, but still was a good read.
I read this book in 1965-1966 when I was 12 years old and I really was engrossed in what felt like a big epic book; it was the longest book I had ever read. I thought that this was an accurate depiction of people’s sensibilities in the U.S. South during the civil war era. Captured well the institutional racism/slave culture (the despicable beliefs of the author are apparent), and also some of the misery of a war torn area. The writing created great atmosphere and imagery that really captured the time and place.
