The book I read was The Worst Hard Times by Timothy Egan. The theme of this book would be survival, it would be this because they move to the Great Planes and the had to fight to survive. The book is set in the 1930’s during what people called the “dirty thirties.” It is a journalistic style of writing that views the lives of teachers\, farmers, bankers, and other people who survived during this time. At the beginning of the book it is around west Texas and the Oklahoma panhandle. The first character you meet is Bam White a former ranch had from the famous XIT Ranch in Texas, he decided to settle in No Man’s Land once his horses give out. Another character is Hazel Shaw they taught school even when there was no pay and had to burry a baby and grandmother from the dust bowl. John McCarthy was a newspaper editor and founder of the Last Man Club. In the book the land also becomes a major character because it influenced how people live. The story has years of good crop prices then the prices drop, along with wet years, and then the drought. During the good years farmers flocked to the High Lands. For a little while farmers were achieving the American dream, then it talked about how the stack markets crashed and some farmers had to eat rabbit and plants. Then a lot of farmers had been foreclosed. From here on it talks about the survival of everyone and how they had mile high dust storms. So this would be an example of why the theme is survival.
