Lisa See transports the reader into late 19th century China through the eyes of narrator Lily and her best friend, Snow Flower. The story begins with their childhood meeting through the hardships they endure, beginning with simply being born a female in China at that time, to the archaic practice of footbinding and arranged marriages. It's one of those "unreliable narrator" gigs, where you want to believe Lily, but realize she's telling only her version of the truth. Not as intriguing as Arthur Golden's "Memoirs of a Geisha" but still a very good read.
