The Dalgliesh series gets more intense and complex with every issuance - gets longer, too, I think. In some authors this would be a criticism,, but James has the imaginative and descriptive talent to carry it along very well. Here she ventures into the small publishing field, with a fuax-Venetian palace on the Thames and a fascinating variety of suspects and for that matter, victims. The police are not neglected, each given a past and a personality that in some cases has an effect on the case. Interestingly, Dalgliesh himself remains the least drawn characters.
