It's weird that I'm so "bleh" about this book, because it's honestly really good - well-written, insightful, subtle. The main character's struggle with his identity and his relationship to his family are both things that I can identify strongly with. I really want to love this book, but I just like it. Give it a try yourself - maybe you'll bring to it what I was missing. Also the Books & Brews April 2007 selection.
