Some gave this book a negative review, but I think those are Grisham fans who were expecting a thriller. This is not a thriller. It is a story about what appears on the surface to be simple people living simple lives. However, emotions and bonds run deep and after having read it 2 years ago, I still think about the significance of a painted house.
The Historian is a story of Dracula told from the viewpoint of a young female historian, tracking her father's pursuit of Vlad across Europe. The history and legends that run throughout the book are fascinating, but I found the story aspects lacking. I just kept waiting for something *exciting* to happen.
Does it appear that I rate every book I finish with five stars? How can we assign a rating to a book? Did it make us think? Did it provoke more questions than it answered? Did it leave me wanting more? If the answers to these questions is yes, then does this book deserve the highest rating?
I read this one for a book group, and it started off so slow that I thought I was going to have to do some major skimming to get through it. It picked up around page 70 or so, though, and from there I really enjoyed it. I was very interested to see where the story would go, and how things would end up. I can't say I loved the ending, but it wasn't horrible.
