We're getting in lots of poetry books at the store right now for Poetry Month. I was pleasantly surprised to find two new books that stood out for their creativity and quality. Button Up is one of those books. Each poem in the book is told from the point of view of an item of clothing. It is clever and humorous, and, unlike in many books of poetry for children, the rhyming isn't painful. I particularly appreciated the brief flashes of insight amidst the humor.
I'll be using this one with my Writer's Workshop kids! Henrietta loves books, so she decides to try writing one of her own. I like how she goes through the rules of writing: not just plot and character, but that the tension must build, and the main character must solve his/her own problem. Great for young writers - and for those writers who aren't so young!
:) :) :) brilliant fantasy!!!! :) :) :)
If you would like to feel like you are self-centered and haven't accomplished much, read about Doctor Paul. I was going to try to cure Africa of TB, but I just haven't had time lately. I need to meet this guy, if only to hear more stories about growing up on a bus. This book unfolds in a grabbing way, and reads easily despite a telling of facts and events.
