A 17 year old boy is found unconscious next to his deceased 16 year old girl friend who has been shot through the head. Murder or a botched double suicide is the question that the law, and both sets of parents want answered. Like the many of Picpoults' novels it switches between time frames well and involves you with the characters

Maggie is an attractive 60 year old women, a former Miss Alabama who left her high school boyfriend in hopes of adventure in New York City. When she doesn't find what she wanted in NYC, she returns to her home town to become a very successful real estate agent selling some of the finer mansions of Birmingham, Alabama. She has friends, plenty of money and basically a good life. For some unknown reason she sets out to commit suicide. The author never does explain this. I could only believe it was because she lived in the past and thought just because she was beauty contest material anymore, her life wasn't worth living. Hogwash, as they would say in Alabama, she had a better life than a lot of people in Birmingham, I'm sure. She methodically plans and plots her demise, right down to the last detail but every time she tries to move ahead with it something happens to make her post pone it. Maggie, in my opninion is a narcissitic, boring female. The story is depressing and lacking in the wonderful southern charm that Flannie Flagg is famous for. This is no Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe , ladies!
