started slow but I stayed up late to finish it
I wasn't a huge fan of Perrotta's last book (which I reviewed on here a few years back), but thought, "OK, this is the guy who gave us Election and Little Children...I owe it to him to give this newest of his a go"). Somehow, I found myself disappointed yet again. It's not as though the story is a difficult or unpleasant read (well, the plot—which shares what happens to a community that has suddenly lost dozens of its residents to a Rapture-like mass disappearance—IS fairly depressing), but Perrotta's writing is strong throughout...so no, that wasn't the problem. I think it was just...this book didn't command my attention. A quick enough read, I finished it during a day of traveling. And only a week or two removed from its final pages, I couldn't even tell you the NAMES of the characters (I'm horrible with names though). Even the details of the plot and what happens to the main people in it are starting to get fuzzy to me. And maybe that's why I didn't love this book more. It just didn't stick with me. It didn't really TRY to stick with me. It just...well, for me, it just kind of was.

I received this book from Goodreads First Reads for free. I found much of this book very interesting since I work in a lab where we do some of the genetic testing that's talked about in the book. I never had any idea of the costs involved with the testing or how the process of the testing was ever invented. An interesting and entertaining look at how innovation occurs and is stifled in the area of genetic research.
Sometimes the book itself bugs me: it's sometimes a numbing whirlwind of facts and numbers, and at other points its a dry historical narrative. But other times its very engaging. And the content he presents is usually amazing. You could easily approach several chapters from a religious point of view and just be left in jaw-dropping awe of the complexity and elegance of the world that surrounds us. And, like all good science books, the more it explores what we know, the more it determines exactly *how much* we don't know... which in itself is mind-boggling.
