12 year old Adbilene Tucker has spent her 12 years of life riding the rails with her father. Now in the summer of 1936 he is headed to work in a railroad camp and is sending her to his hometown of Manifest, Kansas. She was raised on stories of this town, now worn and shuttered during the Great Depression. Spending the summer in Manifest with her father's friend, Shady, Abilene makes friends and goes on a spy hunt. The story of Manifest, Abilene and her father are told by Miss Sadie, the local diviner, as Abilene works off her debt of a broken pot. Will Abilene find the spy called the "Rattler?"
