I like this book a lot, but I doubt I will ever read it again. There are those books I go to again and again because they make me happy. This book made me think, but it definitely did not make me happy. I knew how depressing it could be going into it, so it was no surprise nor was it particularly unwelcome. Sometimes you need to read a tragedy! Three stars instead of five is due to the fact that it is a LONG book. Not necessarily long in words or pages, but mentally long. I read The Black Jewels Trilogy omnibus, more than 300 pages longer, in about a third of the time because it moves where this book dwells. Also - I didn't really like any of the characters. Morgaine was my favorite among the primary players...Gwenhwyfar (yes, it is indeed spelled like that) was whiny, selfish, judgmental and simple-minded, but I guess she had to be to fully redeem herself in the end. I would recommend this book to any fan of Arthurian legend, just for a change of perspective. Be prepared to feel tired and melancholy when you (FINALLY) put it down. I, for myself, may pick up Pride and Prejudice just for a lift in mood...
I got the gist of it about 1/3 of the way through. While I like his ideas about how to build one's "google-ness," I think the idea of abandoning all advertising is pre-mature.
Stephen King recommended. July 2011 EW Summer Reading list. He says: "Joe Pike (you'll find his picture next to ''strong silent type'' in the dictionary) intervenes when two bad boys beat up the proprietor of a sandwich shop. Sounds simple, but what results is a complex, propulsive tale. Crais is as good as anyone working the L.A. crime beat these days."
